in memoriam - mr charles c hadfield
mr charles c hadfield was the former proprietor of hadfield's, and the last member of the family to oversee the business, until his retirement in 2003.
mr hadfield joined the long established family firm after completing his university studies, and worked in the business with his father. apparently, his first task was to grind up a large quantity of copper sulfate crystals into powder, very much in the tradition of a drysalter.
in time, mr hadfield assumed control of the business, which had been passed directly from father to son through thirteen generations of the family, starting in 1755, when the business was purchased from another branch of the hadfield family.
upon his retirement, the business was sadly no longer directly controlled by the hadfield family, but mr hadfield maintained a keen interest in its progress, kindly offering his support, advice, and sharing his experience in all things retail and drysaltery. we are grateful for this, and for the family's continuing support.
